About

Why I built Photobooth+

I wanted a photo strip. Right then, on the laptop that was already open, with the people who were already in the room. Ten minutes later I had installed nothing, printed nothing and taken no photo — and I had found out that the simple thing I wanted did not exist on the web.

Every site I opened wanted something first: an app to download, an account to create, a subscription to start, or a watermark I could pay to remove. The ones that were free took three grainy photos, stacked them on a white background and called it a strip. So I built the one I was looking for.

The problem

What made me start

01

An app to install. A photobooth is a five-minute idea at a party. Nobody downloads a desktop program, grants it permissions and restarts their machine for a five-minute idea.

02

A sign-up wall before the first photo. Being asked for an email address before I had seen a single frame is backwards. You should be allowed to play with the thing, and decide afterwards whether you want to keep what you made.

03

A watermark across the memory. The free tier existed to be ruined. A logo stamped over your friends' faces, removable for a monthly fee.

04

Toy quality. Three filters, one layout, a postage-stamp JPEG. Fun for ninety seconds, useless the moment you wanted to actually send it to someone or print it.

The answer

The rules I gave myself

01

Free, and anonymous until you say otherwise. Open the page, allow the camera, shoot. No account, no card, no watermark on what you take. Paid plans exist only for the cloud extras — syncing your sessions, running a booth in a venue — and never for the booth itself.

02

The browser is the booth. Nothing to install, on any machine with a camera. A laptop at a kitchen table, a tablet propped on a shelf at a party, a phone passed around a table.

03

Instant, or it is not fun. The shutter fires when you press it, filters preview live on the video rather than after the fact, and the strip is composed on your device. Latency kills a photobooth faster than a bad filter does.

04

Powerful, not minimal. The opposite of the three-filter toy: layouts, strip templates, filters, stickers, backdrops, frames and a studio to rearrange every shot afterwards. More control, not less.

05

One click from being sent. A capture that stays trapped in the app is a capture nobody sees. Download it, email it, or sign in and have every session follow you across your devices.

All of it in the browser, all of it free to use. The rest of the product grew out of the same frustration: a library so a session is not lost when you close the tab, cloud sync so it is on your phone too, and a rental marketplace for the days you want a real booth in the room.

I am Emile Moureau, and I build Photobooth+ myself. That is why it moves in odd directions sometimes — a filter exists because someone asked for it on a Tuesday. If something is broken, missing, or if you made a strip you are proud of, tell me. I read everything.
